You Never Get a Bill for It: Archers Wealth on the Investment Cost That Compounds Against You

SW Solutions LtdBy SW Solutions LtdNovember 9, 20213 Mins Read

Every other cost in your life announces itself. The electric bill shows up. The insurance premium leaves your account on the same day each month, and you notice when it goes up. You could probably name what you pay for your phone within five dollars.

Investment costs do not behave that way. They are taken out before the number ever reaches your statement, which means the amount you paid last year is not a line you can find. It is a number you have to go looking for. Most people never do, and the industry has very little reason to make it easier.

What a Single Percentage Point Actually Does

Here is the arithmetic, and it is worth doing slowly because the result is larger than almost anyone guesses.

Take $500,000 invested for 25 years at a 6% annual return. Left alone, it grows to roughly $2.15 million. Now run the same money at 5%, because one percentage point a year went to costs. It grows to about $1.69 million.

The difference is around $450,000. Same market, same starting balance, same 25 years. One percentage point.

That gap is not a fee you paid. It is the growth that the fee prevented, compounding against you every year it was charged. This is the part people miss. A 1% fee does not cost you 1%. It costs you 1% plus everything that 1% would have earned for the rest of your life.

The Costs That Do Not Even Call Themselves Fees

The expense ratio is the visible part, and it is often the smaller part. Underneath it sit costs that never appear on any disclosure you will read.

Turnover is one. A fund that trades heavily generates taxable gains you did not ask for and cannot control, and in a taxable account you pay for that in April. Cash drag is another: money sitting uninvested inside a fund earns nothing while you are charged as though it were working. Then there is the layering problem, where an advisory fee sits on top of fund fees that sit on top of underlying manager fees, and no single number anywhere tells you the total.

This is the argument Archers Wealth makes to people who arrive convinced their portfolio is inexpensive because one number on one page looked small. The firm’s position is straightforward: you cannot manage a cost you have never added up, and adding it up is not optional work.

    Go Find Your Number

You do not need a spreadsheet or a background in finance. You need one afternoon and a willingness to be a little annoyed at what you find.

Pull every account statement. For each fund, look up the expense ratio. Add any advisory or platform fee charged on the balance. Multiply the total percentage by what you have invested. That dollar figure is what you paid last year to own your own money.

Compare it to what you spend on anything else you scrutinize. For a lot of people the investment number is larger than the car payment, and unlike the car payment, it grows every year the balance does.

Then decide whether it was worth it. Sometimes the honest answer is yes, because good advice earns its keep. Often the answer is no, and the person paying had simply never been shown the number.

Go look. It takes an afternoon and it is the highest paid work you will do all year.
