Why is Proper Storage of Bourbon Barrels Important?

For many years, there has been a trend that any whiskey, rum, beer or wine should be aged in used barrels. This brings a tremendous change in the taste of these spirits, which makes them expensive.

These barrels are already seasoned with bourbon’s warm, smoky, and sweet notes, making them perfect for use as finishing casks.

But one thing to note here is that if you do not store them properly, the wood of these barrels becomes dry, due to which cracks start appearing in it, and along with it, mold also grows. This thing not only damages the barrel but also spoils the flavor of the spirit.

Simple and Effective Tips for Storing Used Bourbon Barrels

    1. Keep Barrels Moist to Prevent Leaks

Naturally, oak wood has pores. Therefore, barrels, after long use or being exposed to the open air for an extended period, slowly begin drying, and cracks start appearing as a result. A solution may be offered by these means:

Barrels must be kept in a cold, damp place with humidity of anywhere between 60% and 75%.

Before using the barrel, clean it with fresh water, and burn a sulfur stick inside to prevent mold and pathogen growth.

Frequent inspections are needed for any cracks and spaces between staves in the wood.

    2. Store Barrels on Their Sides

Barrels should be set on their sides with the bung slightly facing up, at 10 o’clock or 2 o’clock. This keeps the bung moist, preventing it from drying out and letting air in. Side storage also allows easy rolling or moving of the barrels when necessary.

    3. Protect from Sunlight and Heat

Direct sunshine and very hot weather can damage used bourbon whiskey barrels. Wood expands and compresses when it becomes hot. Things you put in them may taste different or cause cracks or leaks. To avoid this from happening:

    • The positioning of barrels should be such that they avoid direct or excessive light.
    • Ensure that they are kept in a stable environment, with proper consideration of avoiding heat forcing and freezing.

    4. Check for Mold and Pests Regularly

Sometimes, molds may appear in humid conditions, forming a thin layer over the barrels. Though harmless at first, if they are left sticking to the barrels for some days, they travel rapidly and begin to damage the wood.

When so required, the barrels may be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding the use of harsh chemicals lest they be absorbed by the wood. Also, ensure that the area used for storage is clean and free of the deleterious presence of insects and rodents.

    5. Use Barrels Promptly for Best Flavor

The most special thing about used bourbon barrels is that as soon as they are empty, they hold strong flavors within them. Yes, we can say that their quality has increased.

The longer they remain unused, the bourbon essence inside keeps fading away. The barrels should be filled again as quickly as feasible to maintain all those rich, bourbon-flavored tastes.

    Conclusion

If you want your bourbon barrels to survive longer and stay in good health, you need to always store them the appropriate way. These bourbon barrels need to be wet. The easiest way to keep them is to put them on their sides and keep them out of the light and heat. If this weren’t the case, you would have to check for mold every so often. This keeps the unique taste that is in these barrels.
